Danoff originally wrote it with Johnny Cash's music with a focus on Johnny Cash, however Denver knew from the first time he heard the first versions of the song that it could be a huge success. Danoff recorded the track only a few days afterward after performing it to the awe-inspiring crowd in Washington D.C.
